I am a Brony

For those that don't know, I am a Brony now. I am a fan of My little Pony. I started seeing all the memes online about them, and some were funny, and I got curious, so I watched an episode. It was pretty decent I thought, like any other cartoon. For a show that was meant for little girls, it was actually decent and I could see how others could enjoy it.

Then I figured I would watch another. I was impressed that the show actually seemed to have a decent story behind it. The first pony you are introduced to is Twilight Sparkle, a personal student of Princess Celestia, the ruler of Equestria. Twilight is a Unicorn pony which means she has the ability to control magic at will. She takes it a step further than most Unicorn ponies and thoroughly studies magic to acquire new spells. In her research, she discovers that within a couple days, a forgotten evil that was sealed within the moon will be released after 1000 years. By this point I was interested, and so I watched another episode and I was hooked.

Don't get me wrong, the show can be sickeningly cute and sweet at times. At other times however, it can be hilarious. So I am going to post pony related material in this thread. Feel free to avoid this thread if you think it is stupid, or use it as a way to benefit from all the funny stuff without the cute and without becoming a Brony.

Its ok Jon, I guess its one of those guilty pleasures. It could also be that there is such a lack of good programing that one must have to suffer to find gems in a vast desert. Also, you should watch Big Bang Theory!

I watched part of an episode of Big Bang Theory at Penney's since they recently got satellite and I liked what I saw. Unfortunately it isn't on Netflix.

I'll have to go get a season or two of it then...

About a couple of weeks ago, I pull out of Sam Parker road, and I saw a guy wearing a Brony shirt walking on the shoulder. I found it humorous considering it wasn't long after I became a Brony.

My favorite wow news site has a forum thread for brony-folk, it has over 1,600 pages of posts.

Yeah, it really has a big following. That has to say something for it... right? Lol. I think the writers realized that the show started to get more of an adult male audience and started implementing mild humour that kids wouldn't get. Such as when a character named Spike falls into a punch bowl, and then another pony says "Now the punch is spiked!"

Heh, classic pun. I recall various cartoons having actual spikes in the punch (maybe Beetlejuice?).

They seem to be pretty in touch with their fan base. They have a character named "Derpy" based off of the internet meme, as well as Dr. Whooves (Dr. Who) which was coined by fans.

Yeah, there was a big controversy over Derpy. Derpy is the name given by Bronies to a certain pony that had eyes focused in random directions and was very clumsy and many believed that she actually had a mental disorder. Surprisingly, the producers actually had Rainbow Dash call her Derpy, and her voice was originally lower and goofy sounding. Parents wrote in to protest stating that it was offensive to the mentally disabled. In response, they actually went back and changed her voice, her eyes, and left out her name in future re-airs of that episode. Here is a clip of that episode before and after the change:



Bronies were furious stating that since the show is about love and tolerance, a character with a mental disability was an excellent addition. Really, I could only imagine that a child with a mental disorder would be thrilled to see a character like themselves. But que sera sera.

Saw this on the Star Trek Online forums (apparently it even has a following there) from a guild that has to do with bronies...
